The History

The Woodlands was founded in 1974 by oil businessman George P. Mitchell, who envisioned a premier, environmentally conscious master-planned community. Mitchell wanted to create a suburban development where corporate blocks and residential neighborhoods could seamlessly coexist within a dense, untouched forest canopy. Opening its first village, Grogan's Mill, the community implemented strict design and zoning covenants to keep commercial signage subtle and preserve native trees.
