The History
Humble traces its modern history back to the early 1800s when pioneers first began settling the fertile lands along the San Jacinto River. The city was named after Pleasant Smith "Plez" Humble, an early settler who operated the local post office out of his home and later served as a justice of the peace. The community's economic landscape fundamentally transformed in January 1905 when the Moonshine Oil Company struck oil, establishing the Humble Oil Field. This monumental discovery turned the quiet town into a booming oil center, leading to the formation of the Humble Oil & Refining Company, which eventually evolved into the global energy giant ExxonMobil. The city officially incorporated in 1933 and successfully shifted its focus to retail, commercial infrastructure, and residential development throughout the mid-to-late 20th century.
