The History
Spring traces its foundational history back to the early 19th century when the area was primarily inhabited by the Orcoquiza indigenous tribe before German and European pioneers established settlement contracts. In 1871, the International-Great Northern Railroad laid down tracks through the territory, positioning Spring as a critical transport and switching yard hub. This railroad presence sparked a massive economic expansion, driving local agriculture, cotton processing, and timber operations for decades. The historic commercial core, known today as Old Town Spring, preserves many of these original turn-of-the-century structures. Following the mid-20th century decline of passenger rail traffic, Spring successfully repositioned its historic downtown into a thriving heritage shopping destination, paving the way for extensive master-planned suburban housing growth across north Harris and south Montgomery counties.
