The History

Bellaire was founded in 1908 by William Wright Baldwin, who served as the vice president of the Burlington Route Railroad. Baldwin purchased the 1,000-acre site from the former William Marsh Rice estate to develop a residential neighborhood and agricultural trading center. He named the community "Bellaire," which translates to "Good Air," highlighting its fresh gulf breezes and distance from the industrial density of downtown Houston. Originally, the surrounding prairie served as agricultural land primarily dedicated to truck farming. Bellaire officially incorporated as a city in 1918, and it famously resisted annexation by Houston, successfully remaining an independent city completely surrounded by the Houston urban core.
