The History
New Caney traces its foundational roots back to the 1860s when early settlers began establishing homes along the banks of the local creeks. The town was originally named "Presswood" after pioneers Austin and Sarah Presswood, who built an early homestead in the densely forested region. In 1878, the arrival of the narrow-gauge East Line and Red River Railroad transformed the small agricultural hub into a booming center for the local timber and lumber industry. The community's name shifted to New Caney in 1882 due to the dense brake fields of wild cane growing along the waterways. Throughout the 20th century, New Caney remained a quiet, rural outpost surrounded by the pine forests of East Texas, until a massive real estate expansion and highway infrastructure boom catalyzed its evolution into a premier suburban destination.
